Nepal's Tiger Population Skyrocketing.

Kathmandu: Nepal's tiger population has increased by 64 per cent in the last five years and the country plans to double their numbers by 2022, government said today. 

Addressing a gathering here on the occasion of World Tiger Day, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Mahesh Acharya said that tiger population in Nepal has increased by 64 per cent from 2009 to 2013. 

"The current population of tiger in the country is estimated to be 198, up from 121 in 2009," Acharya said. 

The minister also expressed confidence that Nepal would easily achieve its target of doubling its tiger population to 250 by 2022.

Pointing out that the loss of habitat, human-animal conflict, organised poaching and illegal wildlife trade were the major threats in tiger conservation efforts of the government, the minister suggested that Nepal needs to work in collaboration with tiger reserves in India for better results. 

Director General, Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation Megh Bahadur Pandey said that Nepal was among the leading countries in the world in tiger conservation efforts owing to its strong security arrangement, regular tiger monitoring mechanism and participatory conservation efforts.

Chitawan National Park is the largest tiger sanctuary in Nepal, which is home to 120 tigers, followed by Bardia National Park with 50 tigers, 17 in Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, seven in Parsa Wildlife Reserve and four in Banke National Park. 

World Tiger Day is celebrated on July 29 every year to raise awareness about tiger conservation efforts throughout the world.

It is popularly supposed that the lion is the most courageous and powerful of the carnivora, or at least of the felidae ; but on the few recorded occasions of a battle-royal between the lion and the Bengal Tiger, the lion has come off second best. One such combat occured recently at Calcutta Zoo between an African lioness and a tigress. They were in adjoining compartments of the same cage, and the door having been carelessly opened between the two compartments, the tigress rushed in and disposed of her rival in a fight which lasted about ten minutes.

Tigers shot even through the heart have killed men; no animal is more expert in killing. A few years ago a tiger and tigress were confined in half of a large cage in an Indian zoo; the other half was occupied by a lion and his consort. A steel partition separated the couples. It contained a door, that by some mischance was left unlocked. The tiger put his paw into the opening and walked in to see the lioness. The lion, which had been dozing, leaped to avenge this temerity. In a flash the tigress joined her mate. There was a fearful scuffle, and in a little over a minute both lions lay dead - a most decisive comparison of the merits of the animals as killers.

Saba, a 13-year-old 550-pound tiger, has killed his 7-year-old female companion at the Slater Park Zoo.

An attendant found the dead 300-pound tigress when investigating a disturbance at the animals cages. Saba had killed two lions in a circus before he was bought by the zoo. The zoo had hoped to mate the tigers.

On Wednesday evening a keeper was cleaning out a cage in which were a young lion and a tiger, at the Blackpool Aquarium, and for that purpose put them into an adjoining cage next to two large Bengal tigers. The keeper, in commencing to put the two young animals back in their own cage, lifted by mistaked the sliding partition between that cage and the cage of the full grown tigers. The young lion was bounded into the larger cage, and was immediately crushed to death by one of the tigers.

Allpore, India -  That the tiger is stronger than the lion has been proved by the keepers of animals at the zoological gardens in Allpore, India. When a pair of fully grown African Lions arrived in that city as a gift from the government of South Africa the lion keepers immediately entered into a dispute with the tiger keepers as to whether the tiger was superior to the lion or vice versa. Taking advantage of the inspector's absence, the keepers entered into a dispute with the tiger keepers as to whether the tiger was superior to the lion or vice versa. Taking advantage of the inspector's absence, the keepers decided to have the dispute settled by combat. The grating door between the two compartments in which the lion and the tiger were separately housed was raised and the beasts rushed at each other. A great noise was heard and when the English inspectors reached the scene they found the lion in dying condition. The tiger had triumphed !

Clyde Beatty had a 15-minute battle between a lion and a tiger at his Jungeland Saturday (5). The roll-over tiger put the lion out of action. At Jungleland now are Rex Rossi, Wild West; Lindermann's perch; Tommy Hudon working birds; clowns Harry Dann, Eddie Dullum and Dodo; Joe Cozzo, monks; Beatty and his cats; the Beatty elephants, and David Hoover's Animals. Fight Between a Tiger and a Lion

A fight took place between a tiger, and a lion in the Jungle, New City Road, Glasgow, early on Saturday morning. Two tigers had been left in possession of the arena, and one of the trainers in passing opened the door of the tigers cage, which he was unaware was at the time occupied by one of the Nubian maneless lions. Before the mistake could rectified the animals had closed, the tiger fastening his teeth in the right jaw of the lion. The trainer, by firing blank cartridges from his revolver distracted the animals attention and in the pause that followed both animals were successfully shut up in separate cages. The Trainer procured assistance, and after securely roping the lion to the front bars of the cage he stitched up the wound in the beast's jaw.

Androciles And The Lion

Dr. Boelker of Leipzig has gone farther than Androcles, who removed a thorn from a lion's foot. He was removed a lion's. The operation was performed under an anaesthetic.

The lion's eye had been so badly damaged in a fight with a tiger that it was feared the lion might lose its life unless the eye was removed. Dr. Beolker did it. The animal never stirred during the operation, and is now well again.
